Kalisto Pasuwa Clarifies Katinji’s Exclusion From World Cup Qualifier Squad

MALAWI – The Malawi National Football Team coach, Kalisto Pasuwa, has responded to public criticism over his decision to leave out striker Binwell Katinji for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Namibia.

In a move that stirred debate, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ forward Ephraim Kondowe was included in the squad instead, despite Katinji’s impressive recent performances.

According to The Times Group, Pasuwa explained that the exclusion was part of a broader strategy aimed at preparing the team for future tournaments, emphasizing the need to develop younger players for events such as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“Ephraim’s inclusion is about preparing him for the future due to his age and potential. Katinji is a good player who delivered for us in previous games and we will give him opportunities again”.

Katinji’s omission came as a surprise to many, particularly after his strong performance in the African Nations Championship qualifiers, where he scored two goals against Comoros.

Reports indicate that the striker was dismissed from the camp shortly after arriving and sharing a meal with teammates last Saturday evening.

Silver Strikers, Katinji’s club, has demanded a formal apology from the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) following the striker’s dismissal from camp shortly after arriving.

The club’s Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Chimimba, expressed frustration, stating that they are still awaiting a response. “We have not received any feedback from FAM on this issue,” Chimimba said.

As the Flames prepare for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Namibia, the controversy surrounding Katinji’s exclusion continues to dominate discussions.

Was this the right call for Malawi’s immediate World Cup ambitions?
