Kagame Slams Health Rumours as “Beyond Stupidity” During Liberation Day Media Talk

RWANDA – President Paul Kagame laughed off recent speculation about his health, describing the rumours as “beyond stupidity” during a media roundtable held on Thursday to mark Rwanda’s 31st Liberation Anniversary.
The Head of State addressed circulating falsehoods after social media posts falsely claimed he had been hospitalised or had passed away.
Speaking from Urugwiro Village during the Kwibohora 31 media engagement, Kagame appeared in visibly good health and took the opportunity to challenge the logic behind such rumours.
“Now, how do people account for their personal health? Is there anybody in this world exempt from being human?” he asked, adding that illness is a universal human experience—not a political vulnerability.
He went on to criticise those who spread such claims for political purposes, arguing that hate-driven narratives often collapse under their own weight.
“Just because someone wishes me dead doesn’t mean I’ll go first. In fact, by the time they make such claims, they might already be gone,” he said, drawing laughter from the audience.
Kagame added that managing persistent criticism and misinformation can itself be a source of pressure.
“Some of my personal problems might even come from managing you people,” he quipped, in reference to journalists and online detractors.
According to KT Press, the President’s remarks came in response to a direct question from a journalist.
The open dialogue also touched on Rwanda’s progress since 1994, regional security efforts, and the country’s growing role in international diplomacy.
He closed by reassuring the public about his condition. “Rest assured—it is me sitting here with you,” he stated, dismissing the speculation and encouraging Rwandans to remain focused on development rather than distractions.
