Infant Found Alive in Pit Latrine in Chimanimani

A deeply disturbing incident in Chimanimani has left residents shaken after a woman reportedly discovered an infant inside a pit latrine while using the toilet.

According to reports, on the morning of April 26, Elizabeth Gwata, a resident of Bumba Village under Chief Mutambara, woke up at around 6:00 a.m. and went to relieve herself.

While inside, she was startled to hear a baby crying from within the pit.

Gwata quickly raised the alarm, alerting her 28-year-old son, David Gwata, who in turn contacted local leadership and the police at Cashel Valley.

Community members then moved fast and managed to retrieve the infant alive from the pit.

The baby was transported to Mutambara Mission Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.

At the time of admission, the newborn weighed 2.8 kilograms.

Police say they have started investigations to identify who is responsible.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that may help with the probe.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among residents, many questioning how a newborn could be treated in such an inhumane manner.

Manicaland Province acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the case.
