Illegal Miner Claims They Ate Human Flesh Due to Starvation

SOUTH AFRICA- An illegal miner rescued from the Stilfontein shaft in North West has shared disturbing details about the harsh conditions he and his fellow miners faced. He claimed they had to eat human flesh to survive.

In an interview with SABC, the unnamed miner said that starting in mid-August 2024, the miners began eating flies, cockroaches, and other insects when food ran out. As their situation grew worse, they made even more desperate choices.

He explained that the idea of eating human flesh started as a joke. “One man was jokingly told he would be eaten, and it ended up happening… We never thought it would come to eating dead bodies,” he said.

The miner insisted that the stories of cannibalism were true: “It really happened. People were eaten.”

This news has caught the attention of the world, with activist groups accusing the South African government of human rights abuses and state-sanctioned murder at Stilfontein.

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) compared the deaths of these miners to the Marikana massacre, where 34 miners were killed by police. Saftu leader Zwelinzima Vavi stated that hunger is being used as a weapon in this case.

A family member of one of the miners spoke to Al Jazeera, expressing her worry about her brother’s fate. “I have not heard from him. It is a very difficult moment for us,” she said.

The operation to rescue the illegal miners, known as zama zamas, resulted in 78 confirmed deaths and 246 people rescued.
