Husband Forgives Wife for Gambling Away US$700; Court Orders No Repayment at His Request

A 33-year-old woman from Bulawayo has been given a sentence of 105 hours of community service after she lost her husband’s US$700 while gambling.
Simeleni Dube, who lives in Nketa 8 suburb, appeared in court charged with mishandling property.
Dube admitted her guilt in front of Magistrate Mehluli Moyo. Initially, she received a six-month prison sentence, but three months were suspended if she stays out of trouble for five years.
The other three months will be served through community service at Manondwane Primary School, which she must complete in four weeks.
The prosecutor, Mandrela Chisiiwa, explained that Tawanda Mugodhi, Dube’s husband, had given her the money for safekeeping on October 14.
When he asked for it back four days later, Dube said she had lent it to someone else. Mugodhi then reported it to the police.
In court, Dube revealed that she used the money to gamble on cards and lost everything.
Surprisingly, Mugodhi forgave his wife during the hearing and asked the court not to make her pay the money back, stating that she couldn’t afford to do so and that he provides for their family. -The Chronicle
