A 57-year-old woman from Muzarabani, Madreen Bangome, was tragically killed in an attack by a hippopotamus at Musingwa River.
The incident occurred after the animal, previously shot by game rangers, unexpectedly charged at bystanders.
Assistant Inspector Lucy Chigwenhese, the deputy police spokesperson for Mashonaland Central, confirmed the incident, stating, “I can confirm a sudden death case at Musingwa River in Muzarabani where Bangome was attacked by a hippopotamus.”
According to police reports, a villager had spotted the hippo and alerted game rangers, who returned the next day with .458 Magnum Winchester rifles.
After firing three shots, the hippo appeared to be incapacitated but suddenly revived and charged at the onlookers.
As witnesses scattered in panic, Bangome fell on the riverbank and was bitten twice by the hippo.
She was quickly transported to Muzarabani Clinic, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Authorities have issued warnings advising the public to avoid Musingwa River.
“Please refrain from visiting or crossing Musingwa River, and avoid gathering near riverbanks, especially for activities like fishing or observing wildlife.
Report any sightings of hippopotamuses or other dangerous animals to the nearest police station or Muzarabani Rural District Council official,” Chigwenhese cautioned.
