HEARTBREAKING: Sole Air India Crash Survivor Carries Brother’s Coffin at Burial in Gujarat

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, the sole survivor of last week’s devastating Air India crash, was seen carrying the coffin of his late brother, Ajay, to his funeral—just hours after being discharged from hospital.

The tragic incident occurred in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Thursday, June 12, when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner suffered a catastrophic engine failure shortly after take-off.

The aircraft, which had 242 people on board, including crew members, burst into flames upon impact.

Vishwash miraculously escaped moments before the explosion, while his brother and all other passengers perished.

Footage from the funeral procession shows Vishwash, visibly limping and covered in bandages, shouldering his brother’s coffin through the streets.

The mournful procession took place less than a week after the horrific crash.

Vishwash’s family, who reside in Leicester, United Kingdom—including his wife and son—flew to India to support him following the tragedy.

Both brothers were originally from the coastal town of Diu and had travelled to India to reunite with family.

According to local authorities, Ajay’s body was among the 270 recovered from the crash site and was cremated by relatives in their hometown.

Vishwash’s survival is being described by many as nothing short of miraculous. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited him in hospital to offer condolences and encouragement.

Reports indicate that Vishwash had been seated in 11A, a window seat near an emergency exit, which allowed him to escape the wreckage. His brother Ajay was seated across the aisle in 11J.

Recalling the horrifying moments before the crash, Vishwash told DD News:

“When the flight took off, within five to 10 seconds, it felt like it was stuck in the air. Suddenly, the lights began flickering green and white. The aircraft wasn’t gaining altitude—it was gliding. Then it slammed into a building and exploded.”

He added,

“I saw people dying in front of my eyes—the air hostesses, and two people next to me. I walked out of the rubble.”
