Health Ministry Launches Probe Into Nurse’s Injury Amid Public Outcry

The Ministry of Health and Child Care has launched a formal investigation into the case of Progress Muzuva, a former nurse who sustained career-ending injuries while on duty in 2018, following widespread public outrage and renewed media attention.

Muzuva, who was stationed at Bikita Rural Hospital, was injured during a late-night ambulance mission involving a suicidal maternity patient.

The incident left her with a fractured leg and spinal damage, ultimately rendering her bedridden.

Despite undergoing two spinal surgeries, she remains immobile and continues to appeal for financial assistance to cover post-operative care and a third procedure.

In a statement issued on 03 August, the Ministry extended “sincere sympathy” to Muzuva and her family, acknowledging the hardship she has endured and the broader systemic failures her case exposes.

Officials confirmed that legal advisors are now reviewing whether proper procedures were followed regarding her leave, retirement status, and benefit entitlements.

The Ministry stated that the matter has been referred to its legal team, and that the Health Service Commission and provincial HR departments have been engaged to ensure Muzuva receives all benefits due under public service regulations.

“Where gaps or administrative oversights are identified, corrective action will be taken decisively,” the statement read.

Officials also announced a broader internal audit of occupational injury protocols to improve how frontline health worker cases are handled.

“No one injured in the line of duty should feel abandoned,” the Ministry emphasized.

Muzuva’s case, which resurfaced prominently on social media and in recent news reports, has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for accountability in Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.

She currently owes over US$11,200 in medical and borrowed expenses and remains in urgent need of support.
