Hawks Arrest Man with Explosives at South Africa-Zim Border

A 53-year-old foreign national is set to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly having explosives.

According to the Hawks, the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation, the man was arrested at the Beitbridge Port of Entry on January 17, 2025. Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa said that police stopped a bus traveling from Zimbabwe to South Africa for a search.

During the search, officers found a piece of luggage on top of the fuel tank. Upon closer inspection, they discovered that the bag contained explosives.

Bomb technicians from the Hawks were called to the scene to assist. They removed the luggage from the bus and found three reels of detonating fuse, each measuring 350 meters, worth over R105,000, along with a passport.

The police identified the suspect using his passport and placed him under arrest.

Major General (Adv) Gopz Govender, the head of the Hawks in Limpopo, praised the team’s work. “This shows that law enforcement is making progress in the fight against transnational crime,” he said.
