Harare Mayor Threatens Committee Shake-Up Over Poor Performance

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has fired a stern warning to underperforming committee chairpersons, hinting at an imminent reshuffle amid growing amongst committee chairpersons.

One of the major setbacks has been the absence of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, which has stalled crucial operations and financial accountability.

Speaking during a full council meeting on Friday, Mafume lashed out at committee leaders for allegedly derailing key functions and leaving him to shoulder the blame for the capital’s deepening woes.

“We should consider introducing performance contracts.

“I personally have a performance contract with the President, so what would stop us from having performance contracts with the committee chairpersons as well?” said Mafume.

He singled out the delayed rollout of the ERP system as one of the critical failures undermining the council’s efficiency.

“We can even pass a resolution on this. The issue is very serious if a committee is not functioning properly, it affects my own performance.

“At the end of the day, I am held accountable for matters that are not being brought before the full council. Meanwhile, we are holding meetings where some people just come to pray and then leave,” he fumed.

“How can I be properly evaluated when I am facing such challenges, yet I am chairing the very council that is causing these problems?” he added.

Mafume vowed to take decisive action, warning that August would bring a major reshuffle of committee chairpersons to inject fresh energy and accountability into the embattled city council.

“I will see what I can do to ensure people take their roles seriously.

“Anyway, August is approaching, and that’s when we will reshuffle the committee chairpersons,” he declared.
