Gweru landlord convicted of stabbing tenant with screwdriver over unpaid rent

GWERU – A 40-year-old landlord from Ascot, Gweru has recently been convicted of brutally assaulting his tenant with a screwdriver over unpaid rent.

Jonah Banda appeared before the Gweru Magistrates Court facing assault charges.

The State alleges that on October 1, 2024 at around 1245 hours, the complainant was busy sewing clothes in her room when Banda knocked on the door and immediately entered without waiting for a response.

Once inside, the accused person demanded rent payment to which the complainant responded that she had no money at that time.

This ignited the accused person’s anger and he pulled out a screwdriver from his pocket, stabbing the complainant twice in head.

The complainant filed a police report, leading to the arrest of the accused person.

Banda was sentenced to 4 months’ imprisonment wholly suspended for 5 years on the condition that he commits no similar offenses during that period.
