Guinea Demands 1976 AFCON Title, Seeks Trophy Reallocation from Morocco

Guinea Demands 1976 AFCON Title, Seeks Trophy Reallocation from Morocco – The Guinea Football Federation has formally called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip Morocco of their 1976 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title and award it to Guinea.

The demand stems from a controversial incident during the final round of the 1976 tournament, where Moroccan players reportedly walked off the pitch for about 15 minutes in protest after a red card decision.

Although they later returned to continue the match, which ended 1-1, Morocco went on to win the tournament on points, with Guinea finishing second.

Guinea is now arguing that the match outcome should be reassessed, especially in light of a recent CAF ruling involving Senegal.

In that case, Senegal were stripped of their 2025 AFCON title after walking off the pitch, despite initially winning on the field.

The Guinean FA believes similar disciplinary standards should be applied retroactively, insisting that Morocco’s temporary walkout should have led to sanctions.

“Give us back our 1976 AFCON trophy,” the federation declared, adding that teams that abandon matches, even briefly, should face consequences regardless of the era.

However, sports analysts note that CAF regulations cited in the Senegal case were not in effect in 1976 and are rarely applied to past tournaments.

CAF has not yet issued an official response, but the request is expected to spark debate over whether historical football decisions can be revisited under modern rules.
