Guardiola’s Contract Extension Praised by Peers
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has hailed Pep Guardiola’s contract extension at Manchester City as “good news” for the Premier League. Guardiola, who has led City since 2016, recently signed a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until 2027.
Under Guardiola’s guidance, Manchester City has clinched six Premier League titles, often narrowly surpassing Liverpool teams managed by Jürgen Klopp.
Notably, Liverpool secured the league title in 2020, establishing a fierce rivalry between the two clubs. Slot, who succeeded Klopp this summer, has already made an impact, guiding Liverpool to the top of the league—five points clear of second-placed City after 11 matches.
Commenting on Guardiola’s new deal, Slot stated, “It’s good news for City and the league because everyone wants the best managers and players here. He is definitely one of the best—perhaps the best—in the league.”
He acknowledged that even if Guardiola had chosen to leave, City would still possess the talent to compete at a high level.
Slot referred to Guardiola as “one of the best managers football has ever had,” highlighting the 18 trophies Guardiola has won at City, including the Champions League in 2023.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler echoed these sentiments, calling Guardiola’s extension “the best thing that can happen to the Premier League.” He praised Guardiola’s innovative tactics, stating that competing against him is always a challenge.
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe added to the chorus of support, noting Guardiola’s significant contributions to English football.
“He’s revolutionized how a lot of teams play,” Howe said, emphasizing the importance of his continued presence in the league. “It keeps the Premier League as the best in the world.”
As the season unfolds, Guardiola’s leadership remains a focal point in the ongoing competition among England’s top clubs.
