GO ABROAD, SUNDOWNS EX-CAPTAIN TELLS KHAMA
JOHANNESBURG. – Hlompo Kekana, a former teammate of Khama Billiat at Mamelodi Sundowns, has weighed in into the situation facing the Zimbabwe international forward at Kaizer Chiefs.
Billiat joined the Amakhosi in 2018 after successful spells with Ajax Cape Town and Sundowns.
After five years at the club, his contract expired last week, and he is yet to sign a new one.
Kekana, who played with Billiat at Sundowns, believes Chiefs are making a mistake on the 32-year-old forward.
“I don’t know if Chiefs really know what they’re doing, especially in terms of their star players, because, as a big team, you need your best performers.
“Yes, Khama, in the last three years, hasn’t been playing. He’s been out of the team quite often,” Kekana said on SABC’s Soccer Zone.
“For me, I’d easily try to risk him, and give him a pay cut, and give him more years… As a player, you need security more than anything.
“I want to play for you, but you give me six months. I can’t even prove myself in those six months because I’m playing under pressure.
“There’s little room for me to express myself in that six months… We’re talking about form. As a striker, you’re judged on form in front of goals.”
The former Sundowns captain, Kekana, has said that if he was Billiat, he would consider playing abroad.
“If I were him, I was easily going to take that move [to the UAE] to start afresh in an environment where it’s new for you.
“In South Africa, it’s gonna be difficult for him because he hasn’t played enough football in the last three years.
“As a striker of Khama’s calibre, you’re only as good as your last match. You’ll be expected to score goals because you have shown us what you can do,” Kekana said.
Billiat has not yet announced his next move, but he is reportedly being linked with a move to either North Africa or the Middle East
It will be interesting to see where he ends up next.
If he does decide to play abroad, it will be a chance for him to prove that he is still one of the best players in Africa.
