Ghanaian Boxer Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey Dies Days After Defeat – Ghanaian professional boxer Ernest Akushey, popularly known by his ring name Bahubali, has died just days after suffering a heavy defeat in the ring.

He was 27.

Akushey passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23, 2025, less than a week after his last fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

According to reports, the boxer fell ill on Monday and his condition deteriorated overnight before he was pronounced dead at around 2 a.m.

The promising fighter, who trained at Wadada Gym in James Town, had once been hailed as one of Ghana’s brightest boxing prospects.

He began his professional career with an impressive 6-0 record, earning a reputation for his fearless, aggressive style that quickly made him a crowd favourite.

His nickname, Bahubali, was inspired by the legendary warrior hero from the blockbuster Indian film.

His final bout came on Saturday, September 13, when he faced rising contender Jacob Dickson in a super middleweight contest.

The fight proved one-sided, with Dickson dominating throughout before stopping Akushey in the eighth round via technical knockout.

 

Footage of the fight circulated widely on social media, showing Akushey under sustained pressure in the later rounds. Concerns were raised by fans at the time, with many fearing he may have sustained lasting injuries.

Family members have expressed worry that his sudden death may be linked to the punishment he endured in that fight, although an official cause has not yet been confirmed.
