Fugitive Gweru Businessman Stands Trial for Double Murder

BULAWAYO – Peter Dube, a former car dealer from Gweru, appeared in the Bulawayo High Court this week to face charges of double murder and attempted murder, nearly four years after allegedly shooting four people in a suspected love triangle.

The April 2021 incident left two dead — Shelton Chiduku and Gamuchirai Mudungwe and seriously injured Dube’s second wife, Nyasha Nharingo, and her sister, Nyaradzo.

The trial, delayed by mental health claims and missing witnesses, has reignited public interest in one of Zimbabwe’s most disturbing criminal cases.

Prosecutors allege Dube armed himself with a Zastava pistol and attacked the victims at Bensam Flats in Gweru.

Chiduku was shot while seated in a vehicle and died instantly.

Mudungwe, who tried to flee, was shot in the face and collapsed on the stairs.

Dube then allegedly went upstairs and shot both Nyasha and Nyaradzo, who survived after undergoing emergency surgery.

The attack was reportedly triggered by suspicions of infidelity between Chiduku and Dube’s wife.

After the shootings, Dube fled Zimbabwe and evaded capture for nearly three years, changing identities and seeking asylum in Ireland under the alias Xolile Mtsali.

He was eventually arrested for immigration violations and deported to Mozambique, where authorities confirmed his true identity.

Zimbabwe Republic Police, working with Interpol, arrested him upon arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

The trial was previously stalled after Dube claimed mental instability, prompting conflicting psychiatric evaluations.

A Bulawayo-based doctor later declared him fit to stand trial, contradicting an earlier report from Gweru.

ZBC reported that the absence of key witnesses, including Nharingo, who allegedly fled the country, further delayed proceedings.

Dube faces two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Justice Munamato Mutevedzi is presiding over the case, which is expected to reveal harrowing details of betrayal, rage, and violence.
