From Zero To Hero| Ex-Capetown City Goalie Tatenda Mkuruva Wins Maiden Silverware In USA

Former Capetown City and Zimbabwe Warriors goalkeeper Tatenda Mkuruva clinched his maiden silverware with the United States of America (USA) side Michigan Stars.

The USA-based side sealed the 2021-22 season in style after defeating the visitors Albion San Diego 1-0 in the championship play-offs to clinch its first-ever National Independent Soccer Association ( NISA) league title.

The game’s solitary goal, which witnessed Michigan Stars breaking a long curse, came from Anthony Bowie’s first-half strike.

Mkuruva, who joined the USA championship side from the Zambian topflight side Buildcon in 2019, played an integral part in Michigan’s first-ever NISA league title. The Zimbabwean goalkeeper played 22 matches out of 26 and managed to keep 14 clean sheets.

Despite being outstanding in his club’s performances throughout the season, the ex-Capetown City player attributed Michigan’s 2022 campaign success to teamwork.

“What we have mastered is that defence starts from the striker. So if you are building a defence, and everybody has to get behind the ball, it has to be the striker first getting behind the ball and the other guys building in from the back.

“Also, communication starts from me as the goalkeeper, to the back-line and the midfielders and to the strikers. So it’s all about teamwork, just putting everybody together in the right places at the right time. I think that helped us a lot,” said Mkuruva.

Since joining the American side, Mkuruva, the club’s captain, has been impressing between the posts. His exploits as the goalkeeper helped him to clinch a deal with Egosport.

Egosport and Mkuruva penned a two-year deal which outlines that the sportswear company will be sponsoring the latter with gloves.  “I’m delighted to announce Egosport as my official gloves sponsor.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Egosport for the faith and belief that they have in me by making me part of this amazing brand.

I believe our partnership will help both brands grow and take us to another level,” wrote Mkuruva on Instagram, confirming the deal.
