From Dust to Prosperity: Councillor Mhike’s Vision Transforms Mazvihwa
MAZVIHWA- Marking his first year in office, Councillor Mhike has delivered on his promise to revitalize Mazvihwa, with a string of development projects that have improved lives and livelihoods.
Elected on August 23, 2023, Councillor Mhike hit the ground running, tackling Mazvihwa’s most pressing challenges, including access to clean water and healthcare. He worked closely with the Ward Committee to identify key areas of need and develop solutions.
The community’s water woes are now a thing of the past, thanks to a $15 000 project supported by Muonde Trust. This project enabled the drilling of three new boreholes at Mhike, Chedumhe and Mtomba villages, significantly increasing access to clean water.
In an exclusive interview with AfroGazette News, Chairperson for Moyochena women’s Cooperative garden, Ellen Mutoti credited the councillor’s water development projects for transforming their lives.
“The three boreholes have brought relief, especially to women who had the burden of fetching and carrying water for long distances. Previously, we relied on unsafe water from the nearby Runde River,” she said.
Mutoti also commended Councillor Mhike’s support for the Moyomuchena Women’s Cooperative Garden, which has enabled women to increase their income through agricultural production.
“By constructing a 2-hectare fence, we have protected our crops from wild animals and theft, enabling us to sell produce in Zvishavane and increase income by over 30%,” she noted.
Regarding healthcare improvements, she praised the installation of a solar system at Gudo Clinic, which has significantly enhanced healthcare services.
“Reliable electricity from the solar system has enabled quality healthcare services day and night. This has bridged the gap created by nighttime power outages, ensuring uninterrupted medical care for pregnant women, mothers and the community”.
Cheers Tachigwa, a local youth, commended Councillor Mhike’s initiatives in creating employment opportunities.
“Councillor Mhike’s efforts have helped over 50 youths secure jobs at Murowa Diamonds and Sabi Gold Mine, providing a stable source of income and valuable work experience,” he said.
Councillor Mhike has also strengthened educational infrastructure by renovating a condemned two-classroom block at Mototi Primary School and upgrading Gudo Primary School’s library and ECD block. Additionally, he provided Gwenombe Dip Primary with 10 combined benches and desks, funded by 2023 Development Levies, and donated 20 bags of cement to Baradzamwa Primary.
