Frelimo, Mozambique’s ruling party, has won the national election, continuing its five-decade reign amid accusations of electoral fraud.
Daniel Chapo, 47, will succeed Filipe Nyusi as president, having secured over 70% of the vote.
Venancio Mondlane of the Podemos party followed with 20%, pushing former opposition party Renamo’s candidate to third place.
Frelimo increased its parliamentary seats from 184 to 195 out of 250.
However, international observers have criticized the October 9 election as neither free nor fair, with a European Union mission reporting irregularities in vote counting and result manipulation.
The electoral commission has not addressed the fraud allegations. Following the announcement, Mozambique’s dollar bond, maturing in 2031, fell for the fourth day as investors reacted to potential unrest.
Mondlane, claiming to be the true victor, has called for nationwide protests, with demonstrators already gathering in Maputo.
