Fraudster Stabs Barman After Fake USD100 Note Confrontation

A Gokwe man left two people battling for life after he went berserk and indiscriminately stabbed people who had cornered him after he tried to tender a fake US$100 note.

Believe Mapfumo who is a barman and Munyaradzi Muza are battling for life at Gokwe District Hospital after being stabbed by Willard Phiri (28) who had been cornered over the fake note.

Phiri has since appeared before Gokwe Magistrate Mr Lungile Ncube facing attempted murd£r charges and was remanded in custody to 8 September 2023.

Prosecuting, Miss Melisa Makombe told the court that on 25 August around 9PM, Phiri was at Ngani Business Centre drinking beer in the company of his three younger brothers.

The accused wanted to settle a US$18 bill and reportedly tendered a fake note.

However, Mapfumo, who was behind the counter, suspected that the money was fake and went to the next bar to verify the originality of the money.

They then summoned the accused and the debate drew scores of people who wanted to have a glance at the fake note.

“While they were still discussing, Phiri’s younger brother only identified as Bura snatched the money and started pushing and shoving people causing commotion. Phiri then pulled an okapi knife and started randomly stabbing people,” the court heard.

As a result, Mapfumo and Muza were seriously injured and rushed to Gokwe District Hospital where they are battling for life after sustaining serious stab wounds.
