Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Sentenced to Five Years in 2011 Muammar Gaddafi Case – Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a case involving alleged illicit funds from the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The Paris criminal court acquitted Sarkozy of corruption and illegal campaign financing charges but ruled that he allowed aides to solicit financial support from Libyan officials for his 2007 election campaign.
Judge Nathalie Gavarino imposed a €100,000 fine alongside the custodial sentence.

Sarkozy, who intends to appeal, described the verdict as “extremely serious for the rule of law.”
The case, which dates back to allegations made in 2011 by Gaddafi’s son, has been one of several legal battles faced by Sarkozy since leaving office in 2012.
