First team eliminated from 2026 World Cup – 969 days before tournament begins

Guam, a US island territory, have become the first side to be dumped out of the 2026 World Cup after they lost their second leg of a qualifier to Singapore.

Asia’s route to World Cup qualification starts with a two-legged tie featuring some of the lowest ranked sides on the planet. Alongside’s Guam’s clash with Singapore, Afghanistan played Mongolia and Nepal faced Laos – among other fixtures.

Guam had gone into the second leg one goal down. And they were unable to overturn the deficit, becoming the first team to be dumped out of the World Cup, 969 days before it kicks off. Daily Star
