A fire erupted early Wednesday morning, resulting in severe damage to the well-known Bulawayo restaurant, Fairy Café, situated in the heart of the city’s business district.
The city’s Chief Fire Officer, Mr. Mhlangano Moyo, indicated that the fire likely stemmed from an electrical fault or an appliance left on overnight.
The blaze began during the night and was only detected in the early hours.
“There was significant damage to Fairy Café on Fife Street and 13th Avenue.
Something was left on; the fire ignited during the night and was spotted around 3 or 4 AM, but we were able to control it,” he stated.
Firefighters responded swiftly, successfully containing the flames and preventing further damage to surrounding buildings.
As of the initial assessments, there were no reported injuries, although the café faced extensive interior damage.
Authorities plan to conduct further investigations to clarify the fire’s cause, and local business owners have been reminded to ensure that all electrical devices are switched off before closing for the night.
