Father burns 12-year-old son over missing generator part

MALAWI – A 12-year-old boy from Chilombo Village in Neno District, Malawi, suffered severe burns after his father pressed his hands against a fire, accusing him of misplacing a generator part.

Ivy Clemence, the minor’s grandmother, recalled being horrified by the child’s agonized screams which prompted her to confront the father, who then shockingly admitted to the heinous act. “I burned him,he admitted displaying a disturbing lack of guilt.”

The boy is undergoing treatment at Neno District Hospital, while authorities have declined to comment on the father’s arrest.

Unfortunately, this incident is just one of many cases of child abuse reported in Malawi in recent years. In 2020, a 40-year-old stepfather was arrested for allegedly burning his 7-year-old stepson’s hands and legs over accusations of stealing food.

In 2019, a 35-year-old father was arrested for allegedly assaulting his 10-year-old daughter, causing severe injuries.

The incident has sparked outrage, highlighting the need for increased awareness and action against child abuse in Malawi.
