Farmers Urged to Switch to Boran Cattle After Show-Stopping Bull Steals Spotlight

HARARE — Farmers across Zimbabwe are being urged to adopt Boran cattle, a robust breed praised for its disease resistance and minimal upkeep.

The message took center stage at the Harare Farmers’ Show, where 66-year-old breeder Alfonsi Chayumbaka from Hwedza exhibited the Bravo Boran BTR1960 bull—an impressive 960kg animal born in 2019 and tipped to claim the event’s top trophy.

Chayumbaka, who manages the livestock farm alongside owner Richard Matewa, said Boran cattle are ideal for farmers seeking hardy and manageable livestock.

“The Boran cattle breed is not difficult to maintain. In summer, they graze on pasture grass. In spring, we provide supplementary feed for nurseries and other needs,” he said.

He added that routine vaccinations and prescribed medications are enough to keep the herd healthy, minimizing losses from disease.

The Hwedza farm has built a strong reputation for producing top-tier Boran cattle, consistently earning accolades at the Harare Farmers’ Show for breed quality and presentation.

The farm operates dedicated rearing zones to ensure proper feeding and care, with nutrition and pasture management prioritized throughout the year.

As reported by YouthVillage.co.zw, the farm’s consistent performance has positioned it as a standout in Boran cattle breeding.

The Bravo Boran bull continues a winning legacy, following in the footsteps of a larger Boran bull from the same lineage that previously secured the show’s top award.

“They have strong natural immunity,” Chayumbaka emphasized, urging fellow farmers to consider Boran cattle as a smart investment to improve herd productivity and reduce disease-related costs.

With growing interest in sustainable and disease-resistant.
