Epworth Woman K!lls Son Using Rat Poison

Epworth Woman K!lls Son Using Rat Poison – A 26-year-old woman from Epworth, Hazel Makuyana, has been arrested in connection with the death of her five-year-old son, Mukudzeyi Makuyana, in a tragic case police say is linked to a domestic dispute.

The young boy’s body is currently at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident and the subsequent arrest.

“We arrested Hazel Makuyana in connection with the death of her five-year-old son, Mukudzeyi Makuyana. A sachet of rat poison was recovered from the child’s bed during investigations,” said Inspector Chakanza.

According to police, the incident followed a heated argument between Makuyana and her husband, Talent Nyakuwawa (41), over her alleged continued communication with her former husband. Nyakuwawa reportedly left for work after the dispute.

Later that evening, at around 7pm, Nyakuwawa returned home and discovered the child lying unresponsive on the bed. He rushed Mukudzeyi to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, where medical staff attempted to save his life.

“Despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilise the child, he unfortunately passed away on Saturday,” said Inspector Chakanza.

Investigations later led to Makuyana being called to the hospital on Monday after Nyakuwawa contacted her under the impression that the child was still receiving treatment.

“Talent lured the suspect to the hospital under the pretence that the child was still being treated. Upon arrival, she was taken into custody,” Inspector Chakanza said.

During questioning, Makuyana allegedly confessed to administering the poison to the child.

“The suspect admitted to giving the poison to her son. She also indicated that she had taken the poison herself with the intention of ending both their lives,” he said.

Police said the suspect later went to the Balancing Rocks monument in Epworth, believing she would die there after ingesting the poison.

Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
