Drunken Zambian Police Officer Frees 13 Suspects to Celebrate New Year

In the heart of Lusaka, Zambia, the New Year’s Eve celebrations were in full swing. Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, known for his dedication to duty, found himself in an unusual predicament. After a few too many drinks at a local celebration, Phiri’s judgment became clouded.

As the clock neared midnight, Phiri, in a state of intoxication, returned to the Leonard Cheelo Police Station. With a festive spirit overtaking him, he decided that no one should spend the New Year behind bars. He forcibly seized the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda and, with a flourish, unlocked the cells housing 15 suspects. “You are free to cross over into the New Year!” he declared.

Thirteen of the suspects, accused of crimes ranging from assault to burglary, seized the opportunity and fled into the night. The remaining two, perhaps too stunned or cautious, stayed behind. Phiri, realizing the gravity of his actions, also fled the scene, disappearing into the nearby compound.

The next morning, the police station was in chaos. A manhunt was launched to recapture the escapees, and Phiri was swiftly arrested. The incident became the talk of the town, with many finding humor in the bizarre turn of events, while others were concerned about the implications for public safety.
