Discovery Ambulance Delivers Free Medical Aid to Thousands at ZCC Shrine
GOKWE — A contingent of 34 healthcare professionals from Discovery Ambulance Services has been deployed to the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Defe Dopota shrine to offer free medical services to thousands of congregants attending the church’s annual gathering.
The initiative, launched in response to an invitation from ZCC leader Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi, aims to support the country’s largest religious congregation with emergency care and health education.
The team includes two medical doctors, two paramedics, six emergency medical technicians, an emergency dispatcher, two firefighters, 10 ambulance technicians, and several medical assistants.
Their arrival brings the total number of Discovery personnel on-site to 40, ensuring comprehensive medical coverage throughout the event.
Discovery Ambulance Services founder and CEO David Munowenyu said the deployment was in response to a request from ZCC leadership to support the large influx of congregants.
“We received an invitation from Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi to assist as they receive large crowds for their congregation.
“The first team went last weekend and trained 150 members of the church in Basic First Aid. The idea is that they will then assist our medical staff as they go about their business,” he said.
He also emphasized the spiritual significance of the assignment, describing it as both a privilege and a national responsibility.
“It is a great honour to serve in the house of the Lord. Just as His Excellency Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa says, we are leaving no one and no place behind,” Munowenyu said.
The initiative forms part of Discovery’s wider holiday disaster mitigation strategy, which includes highway emergency response operations in partnership with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
Through the “Drive Safe to Arrive Alive” campaign, Discovery teams are stationed along major routes to provide rapid assistance in case of road traffic accidents.
Munowenyu said the company was also collaborating with other national stakeholders to strengthen emergency response efforts.
“We are also working with various entities like TelOne, NatPharm, and the Ministry of Health and Child Care to ensure coordinated support across the country,” he added.
