Disaster on the Tracks: Train Smashes Into ZRP Mahindra Truck in Gweru

GWERU – A Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) vehicle was struck by a train in Gweru yesterday, after the driver allegedly failed to stop at a railway level crossing, according to a statement from the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ).
The collision occurred near the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID), with a train wagon hitting the ZRP Mahindra truck.
The NRZ attributed the accident to failure by the police officer to observe traffic regulations, emphasizing the need for strict compliance with road and railway safety protocols.
“The incident occurred when the police officer driving the vehicle failed to stop at the level crossing as required by the rules,” the NRZ statement noted.
This marks the second such accident involving a ZRP vehicle this year, following a similar collision in January, where a police-driven Ford Ranger was involved in a crash with a train.
According to iHarare, the NRZ issued a stern warning to all motorists, particularly law enforcement officers, urging them to exercise extreme caution at railway crossings.
Officials emphasized the importance of coming to a complete stop, checking for approaching trains, and proceeding carefully to prevent further accidents.
“We urge all drivers, including police officers, to exercise extreme caution at road/rail crossings.
“Always come to a complete stop, check for approaching trains, and proceed with caution. Never attempt to race a train,” NRZ stated.
Meanwhile, reports from The Sunday Mail confirmed that two police officers were inside the Mahindra truck at the time of the crash.
However, NRZ did not provide details on their condition and ZRP had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.
