According to BBC Sport, Jota, 28, was returning to Liverpool for pre-season training after undergoing minor surgery, which prevented him from flying. He had recently married his long-term partner, Rute Cardoso, just 11 days before the crash and had three children with her.

Liverpool Football Club expressed their sorrow, calling Jota’s death a “tragedy that transcends” the club. Fans gathered outside Anfield to pay their respects.

A vigil for Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, is taking place in their home suburb of Gondomar in the Portuguese city of Porto.

The gathering of people to remember the two men was due to start at the Chapel of Resurrection at 08:00 local time (07:00 GMT), a local priest told the PA news agency.
