CUT Student’s Suicide Leaves Community in Shock

The Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) community has been plunged into mourning following the suicide of a first-year Agricultural Engineering student, Abraham Chabata, who took his life on the institution’s sports fields last week.

The 20-year-old was described by fellow students as a “model learner” who exhibited no signs of distress prior to the incident.

He reportedly ingested an unknown poison and left a suicide note addressed to his family, indicating that he was financially stable.

The tragedy occurred just four days after another engineering student at the same university also committed suicide, with peers revealing that the earlier victim had been struggling with mental health challenges and had stopped attending lectures.

Chinhoyi University of Technology Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Shadreck Nembaware, confirmed the incident, expressing shock at the sudden loss.

“The university is saddened to lose a young life at its prime, especially when professional counsellors are available to support students,” said Nembaware.

“His family also expressed shock, noting that he had never voiced any concerns or shown signs of distress.”

In an interview with H-Metro, one of Chabata’s colleagues revealed that he skipped lectures on the day of his death, prompting a search by fellow students.

“They eventually reached him by phone, but his voice was faint, and he said he was dying,” said the student.

“When they found him at the grounds, he had vomited and there was froth on his mouth.”

The Student Representative Council (SRC) described the incident as a devastating blow to the tightly-knit university community, urging students to speak up about personal struggles and seek support.

Mashonaland West Police Spokesperson, Inspector Ian Kohwera, confirmed the suicide but said investigations were still ongoing.
