Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) has been thrown into mourning once again after Mclarian Chando, popularly known as DJ Killers, died from injuries sustained in a recent road accident in Chiredzi raising the student death toll to five within nine months.

Chando, a Level 3:1 Information Technology student, succumbed at Parirenyatwa Hospital where he had been transferred for critical care.

Fellow students described him as a vibrant character whose passion for music brought joy to many on campus.

SRC Minister of External Affairs, Information and Publicity, Malvin Saint Madanda, confirmed the loss, saying:

“It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing on of one of our fellow students, Mclarian Chando, widely known among us as DJ Killers.

“Mclarian was a Level 3:1 student who was studying Information Technology.

“A bright young man with a remarkable spirit, a passion for music and a future full of promise.

“His presence was felt in every corner not just in the classrooms but in the hearts of those he shared conversations, laughter and dreams with.

“As we grieve this unimaginable loss we also stand together in unity and remembrance.

“Monday of September 1st 2025, has been declared Black Monday in his honour.”

Fellow students echoed the tribute, with one describing him as a source of inspiration:

“He was a very cheerful person who loved his music which was infectious. Chando was a humble person who inspired us.”

This latest tragedy comes days after Panashe Mwinga, a promising graduate, died in a road accident near Gwebi River.

She had just completed her degree in Visual and Communication Multimedia.

An eyewitness at the crash scene told H-Metro:

“The graduate was clad in her gown. I pulled out the father, mother and the kid… What saddened me most was seeing people taking videos and not being able to help.”

Other losses include Tanatswa Chinyama, who was hit by a vehicle last November, and Abraham Chabata and Takudzwa Alex Mapurisa, who both died in separate suicide incidents last month.
