Concerns Rise Over Child Drownings at Goromonzi Dam

Residents of the Green Valley suburb in Goromonzi are increasingly worried about the safety of children at a nearby dam, where seven young lives have been lost to drowning since November of last year.

The dam features a swift-flowing waterfall that cascades from a height of over five meters, creating an inviting yet deceptive swimming spot for local children. The latest tragedy occurred this past Tuesday when a 16-year-old boy drowned, adding to the alarming toll.

Local residents have voiced their concerns about the dam’s allure. “Children are drawn to swim here. While it seems safe with floating weeds on the surface, the depth of the dam wall is the same as the water behind it, leading to drownings,” one resident told ZBC News.

Another resident recounted a frightening experience: “Children often drown while swimming in the dam, and their unusual exits from the water sometimes make it seem like there’s a mermaid. I remember a time when a strong whirlwind came from the east and caused the water to rise dramatically, which scared everyone away.”

To enhance safety and prevent further tragedies, residents are advocating for protective measures. “We need to put up a fence or concrete barrier topped with razor wire to keep children away from the water,” suggested another concerned individual.

Drowning remains a critical issue worldwide, particularly among children. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is one of the leading causes of death and injury, claiming over 236,000 lives annually.

As the community grapples with these tragedies, the call for action to protect children at the dam grows louder.
