Kazembe captured national attention after risking his own life by descending into a sewage-filled excavation site on Sunday night to recover what was initially believed to be the body of one missing person. However, the operation took a shocking turn when he discovered and retrieved three bodies from the muddy pit.

The experienced diver, who has spent 16 years conducting rescue and recovery missions, described the incident as one of the most disturbing and mysterious operations of his career. The thick sewage and hazardous conditions made the mission extremely difficult, with Kazembe requiring assistance to get out of the trench after completing the recovery.

His courageous actions earned widespread praise from Zimbabweans, many of whom hailed him as a national hero for carrying out a task that others were unable or unwilling to undertake.

In recognition of his selfless service, Sir Wicknell Chivayo gifted Kazembe a Toyota Aqua and US$20,000 for fuel, applauding him for his dedication to saving lives and serving communities despite the risks involved.

The tragic discovery of the three bodies has also raised serious questions about safety at the excavation site in Budiriro, where the City of Harare has been carrying out rehabilitation works.

Following the incident, Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the conditions at the site.
