Civil Servant Car Import Deal Gone Wrong
A car import deal went awry for Sakura Vuta Dewatering Private Limited, costing the engineering firm US$15,000. The company, led by director Phillip Vuta, fell victim to a scam orchestrated by Tatenda Mikishoni, a Human Resources Officer with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Chikomba District, Chivhu.
In April, Vuta sought to purchase and import a vehicle from Be Forward Japan to Zimbabwe. He enlisted Mikishoni, who had successfully assisted with previous vehicle imports.
On April 29, Vuta handed Mikishoni US$10,000 in cash as a deposit for a Toyota Hilux Vigo Champ double cab 2020 model. Mikishoni deposited the money into his Eco Bank account. The following day, Vuta, through his lawyers, Rufu and Makoni Legal Practitioners, added US$5,797 to complete the payment.
Mikishoni signed to acknowledge receipt of the total US$15,797 and was supposed to transfer US$15,190 to Be Forward for the purchase, as indicated on the invoice. Instead, Mikishoni deposited only US$4,588 and pocketed the remaining US$10,602, which has not been recovered.
