Church Leader Sentenced Over Sexual Intercourse with 13-Year-Old
A 27-year-old church leader has been sentenced to three years effective imprisonment after being convicted of having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old minor, the Rusape Magistrates’ Court has ruled.
The court heard that the incident took place shortly after New Year’s Eve prayers at the church, where the accused held a position of trust and authority.
According to the prosecution, he used this position to gain access to the complainant and exploit the situation.
“The offender who is a church leader lured the child into his private room after New Year’s Eve prayers.
“He locked the door and sexually assaulted the victim. The victim later disclosed the abuse and a police report was filed,” the court said.

However, the accused admitted having sexual intercourse with the complainant, maintaining that it was consensual, but the court rejected this defense.
“Consent has no legal relevance where the complainant is below the age of 18,” the magistrate said.
On that basis, the court returned a competent verdict of sexual intercourse with a minor and sentenced the offender to an effective three years in prison.
In a statement after the judgment, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said the case carried an important message.
“Positions of spiritual leadership must never be used to take advantage of young people,” NPAZ said.
“The conviction shows that the courts will act to protect children and apply the law accordingly.”
