Chinhoyi Hospital Surgeons Successfully Remove Life-Threatening 9.3kg Tumor

CHINHOYI – A team of surgeons at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital successfully removed a massive 9.3kg tumor from a 34-year-old woman’s womb in a complex operation conducted on Thursday afternoon.

Hospital officials confirmed that the procedure was a success and the patient is now recovering under close medical supervision.

The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, had been experiencing severe discomfort due to the tumor. Specialists at the hospital carefully executed the operation to ensure the safe extraction of the growth.

This achievement comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s healthcare sector continues to demonstrate significant advancements in complex surgeries.

In 2024, Zimbabwean and international surgeons performed the country’s first uniportal video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), successfully removing a lung through a single small incision.

The operation, conducted at Parirenyatwa Hospital and Avenues Clinic, involved Spanish expert Professor Diego Gonzales Rivas, working alongside local cardiothoracic specialists Dr. Kudzai Kanyepi, Dr. Simukai Machawira, and Dr. Wilfred Mutewere.

Medical experts described the procedure as a milestone in the country’s surgical field.

Additionally, Zimbabwe has made strides in precision medicine, an advanced approach that tailors treatments based on individual genetic and environmental factors.

The Cell Biotech Institute has spearheaded research efforts in this area, developing cutting-edge solutions for complex diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

ZBC News reported that the surgical team at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital expressed optimism about the patient’s recovery, praising the operation as a testament to their expertise.

Health officials commended the hospital’s efforts, describing the surgery as a reflection of Zimbabwe’s growing ability to handle complex medical cases.

The success of this procedure reinforces Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital’s reputation for life-saving interventions, setting a new benchmark for surgical excellence in Zimbabwe.
