Cape Town Petrol Station Employee Fired After Buying a Car — Boss Demands Bank Statements

Cape Town Petrol Station Employee Fired After Buying a Car — Boss Demands Bank Statements – A fuel station owner in South Africa is facing public scrutiny after allegedly dismissing an employee simply for purchasing a car.
Aseza Limelintaka, who worked as a cashier at a Shell petrol station in Maitland, was reportedly fired by her boss, Shiraaz Patel, shortly after she acquired a vehicle.
According to a report by Velani Ludidi published on 30 June, Limelintaka’s joy turned sour when Patel confronted her with the question: “How did you afford a car?”

It is alleged that Patel went as far as demanding to see her bank statements to justify how she managed the purchase on what he considered a low salary.
Limelintaka, who had been excited to improve her quality of life, was instead left shocked and humiliated.
According to Limelintaka, her employer insinuated that her financial dealings were suspicious and incompatible with her income level — a stance that many have criticised as intrusive and discriminatory. She was eventually dismissed from her position.

The incident, now widely circulated on social media and news platforms, has sparked public outrage and raised concerns about employer overreach and employee privacy.
Critics argue that unless there is concrete evidence of misconduct or fraud, an employee’s personal financial decisions should not be a matter of concern for the employer.
Labour experts have since commented that if the allegations are true, the dismissal may constitute an unfair labour practice under South African labour law.
No official comment has been issued by Shell South Africa at the time of publication.
