Bulawayo Youth Takes Own Life After Row With Mother Over Spilled Cooking Oil

BULAWAYO – A 21-year-old Cowdray Park resident died by suicide on Saturday, 12 July, after ingesting rat poison in response to a domestic dispute with his mother over spilled cooking oil, according to police reports.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday, and identified the deceased as Thabiso Ndlovu.

She said the conflict began when Ndlovu was reprimanded by his 41-year-old mother for spilling two litres of cooking oil on the floor.

“This did not go well with the now deceased who became angry and drank rat poison. His mother saw him vomiting and upon inquiry, he admitted to ingesting the poison,” said Inspector Msebele.

An ambulance was called, and Ndlovu was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Despite medical efforts, he died two days later, on Monday morning at around 5:40a.m.

His mother was informed of his passing by hospital staff.

According to the Chronicle, the details of the dispute and hospitalization have sparked concern over emotional stress in domestic settings and the need for mental health support.

Police are urging families to handle disputes constructively and seek professional assistance when under emotional strain.

“We continue to encourage families to engage in open dialogue and seek help when faced with emotional challenges. Taking one’s own life is never the solution,” added Inspector Msebele.
