Bulawayo Man Remanded After Stealing US$2,937 From Employer for Hotel Stay

BULAWAYO — A 26-year-old man from Gwabalanda suburb has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to stealing US$2,937 from his employer and using the funds to book hotel accommodation.

The accused, Mxolisi Moyo, appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Steve Ramaboena, where he admitted to the offence of theft.

The incident occurred on 25 April at Gasglove Gates, where Moyo had been entrusted with 36 LP gas tanks, each weighing 53kg, to sell on behalf of his employer, Marvellous Nyathi.

Instead of depositing the recorded sales amounting to US$2,937 into the company’s safe, Moyo diverted the funds for personal use.

In court, Moyo confessed to using part of the stolen money to pay for a bed-and-breakfast stay at a local hotel.

He also claimed to have set aside US$500, which he offered as partial restitution.

Magistrate Ramaboena remanded him in custody until 10 July for sentencing.

According to Chronicle, the matter has sparked concern over growing cases of employee theft, particularly in cash-handling roles within small businesses.

Legal analysts have called for strengthened financial monitoring and background checks in employment practices to mitigate the risk of internal fraud.
