Budiriro Man Dies in Bizarre Self-Mutilation Incident – Residents of Ngungunyani, Budiriro, are reeling in shock after a 21-year-old man died in a disturbing incident that many described as “beyond human understanding.”
The man, identified as Aaron Mutize, reportedly cut his own flesh using broken ceramic plates, ate parts of it, and later threw himself into a fire. He sustained deep wounds and severe burns, dying on his way to the hospital last Saturday due to excessive bleeding. He was later buried at his rural home in Masvingo.
Videos of the tragedy, which have since circulated in the community, show Aaron consuming his own flesh — sparking speculation among residents as to whether he was under the influence of drugs or possessed by evil spirits.
Police said they had not yet received an official report.
Neighbours recounted how Aaron, who was known as a polite and respectful young man, suddenly began acting abnormally the day before the tragedy.
“I saw he was not well on Friday,” said neighbour Ambuya Ashumba who spoke to The Herald.
“That night, I heard strange noises but could not investigate. The next morning, his mother told me he was sick. He started shouting, carrying a knife, and even threatened to kill his siblings before running out of the house.”

Witnesses said Aaron smeared blood on the walls and doors of his home, smashed window panes, and continued stabbing himself. He eventually fled to a shrine in the area, where he stripped naked, set himself on fire, and cried out for divine intervention.
Another neighbour, Tawanda Guvamombe, said: “He was calling for God’s hand to save him. He wasn’t into drugs; he used to sell clothes and lived with his mother. People tried to restrain him, but he was too strong.”
Aaron’s final moments were marked by desperation. According to neighbour Takanaka Pazorora, he cried that he wanted to die in the name of Jesus, before collapsing after drinking water given to him by his mother.
Budiriro residents have been left deeply unsettled, with many still struggling to understand how a “well-behaved young man” met such a tragic end.
