Boy (10) Dies After Ox-Drawn Cart Overturns in Featherstone

A 10-year-old boy died on 27 June after an ox-drawn scotch cart he was riding overturned along a dust road in Featherstone, Mashonaland East Province.
The cart, which was being led by a 15-year-old male juvenile and carrying one passenger, reportedly struck a tree and overturned, resulting in fatal injuries.
In a statement shared on their official Twitter account, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the victim sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chivhu General Hospital.
Preliminary investigations suggest the cart lost control before impact.
Authorities are probing possible causes, including lack of supervision and the safety risks posed by minors handling animal-drawn carts.
The ZRP urged parents and guardians to closely monitor children operating ox-drawn vehicles, especially in rural areas where such transport is common.
Police emphasised that even non-motorised transportation demands care, control, and responsible oversight.
