Bishop Sparks Debate, Calls for ‘Third Testament’ and Removal of Some Bible Verses

Yvette Flunder, senior pastor of City of Refuge United Church of Christ in California, says some parts of the Bible should be removed, describing them as “problematic.”

Speaking during a message for the Center for Public Theology & Public Policy, Flunder argued that certain passages in both the Old and New Testaments do not reflect God’s true nature.

She suggested the need for a “Third Testament,” saying the New Testament is not the direct word of God but rather words written about God.

Flunder pointed to verses about slavery and women remaining silent in church as examples she finds troubling. She said if such texts do not align with a loving image of God, they should be reconsidered or removed.

Her remarks have sparked strong reactions online, with many debating her views on scripture and Christian beliefs.
