The Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) has issued community radio broadcasting licences to six community-based stations, marking a major boost for grassroots media and local storytelling across the country.
The licences were granted under the provisions of the Broadcasting Services Act [Chapter 12:06], strengthening community access to information and amplifying local voices.
The newly licensed stations are:
- Chivi Community Radio Station (Chivi)
- Chomazumba Community Radio Station (UMP)
- Dande FM (Dande)
- Jakata FM (Gutu)
- Ndera FM (Marondera)
- Nhimbe FM (Makoni)

Announcing the development, BAZ Acting Chief Executive Officer Matthias Chakanyuka said the move was aimed at deepening community participation in national discourse.
“The licensing of these community radio stations is a significant step towards empowering communities to tell their own stories, preserve local cultures and actively participate in national dialogue,” said Chakanyuka.
He also highlited that the authority remains focused on nurturing a responsible broadcasting sector.
“BAZ remains committed to facilitating a vibrant, inclusive and compliant broadcasting sector that serves the needs and aspirations of all Zimbabweans,” he said.
The issuance of the six new licences comes as Zimbabwe continues to liberalise the broadcasting space, with community radio increasingly viewed as a cornerstone of inclusive information sharing and democratic participation.
