Bafana Bafana Exit AFCON After 2–1 Defeat to Cameroon

Bafana Bafana Exit AFCON After 2–1 Defeat to Cameroon  — South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to an end on Sunday night after Bafana Bafana were eliminated 2–1 by Cameroon in a tense round-of-16 encounter played in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.

Having narrowly progressed from the group stages, the South Africans found themselves up against a historically dominant opponent. Cameroon, five-time Afcon champions, once again underlined their pedigree, ending Bafana’s hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals.

The match began at a frenetic pace, with both teams showing urgency and intent. Bafana Bafana enjoyed a positive opening spell and created the better chances in the early stages but failed to convert their opportunities, a shortcoming that would later prove costly.

Cameroon suffered an early setback when Darlin Yongwa was forced off through injury in the 21st minute. He was replaced by Aboubakar Nagida, but the substitution did little to disrupt the Indomitable Lions’ momentum.

Despite South Africa’s promising start, Cameroon struck first in the 34th minute. A corner kick caused confusion in the Bafana defence, and Junior Tchamadeu, reacting quickest in a goal-mouth scramble, fired home to give the West Africans the lead.

The situation worsened for South Africa shortly after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Christian Kofane doubled Cameroon’s advantage with a powerful header, once again exposing Bafana Bafana’s vulnerability from set pieces.

Trailing 2–0, South Africa pushed forward in search of a response. They created several chances but were repeatedly denied by Cameroon goalkeeper Devis Epassy, who produced a string of crucial saves.

Bafana finally found the breakthrough late in the match when Evidence Makgopa connected with an Aubrey Modiba cross with just two minutes remaining in regulation time. However, the goal proved to be a mere consolation as Cameroon managed the closing stages to secure their place in the quarterfinals.
