African Herbal Remedies Need a Modern Makeover, Expert Warns
Traditional medicine practitioners have been urged to modernize their practices by adopting improved packaging, value addition, and certified organic processes to meet rising consumer expectations and compete on the global stage.
Zambian herbal specialist John Phiri made the call during the ongoing Zimbabwe Agricultural Show (ZAS), where he is exhibiting a wide range of organic herbal remedies aimed at promoting health and wellness through natural solutions.
“Traditionalists must also move with the times, do value addition and improve their packaging for organic medication,” said Phiri, who is also the managing director of Jonmaka Products, based in Lusaka.
Phiri said his company’s participation at ZAS was intended to introduce its products to the Zimbabwean market and encourage regional collaboration in herbal medicine.
“We came this year to introduce our numerous products to Zimbabweans,” he said.
In an interview with NewDay, Phiri emphasized that proper labeling, attractive presentation, and quality assurance are critical for building consumer trust and expanding the reach of African herbal products.
“Proper labelling, attractive packaging and quality assurance are essential for positioning African herbal medicine on the global stage,” he said.
He added that embracing certified organic processes and modern techniques could transform healthcare delivery and unlock economic opportunities across the continent.
“By embracing value addition, improved packaging and certified organic processes, herbal medicine can play a vital role in transforming healthcare and creating economic opportunities across Africa.”
This year’s ZAS is being held under the theme Innovation for Sustainable Growth, highlighting the importance of modern approaches in agriculture and allied sectors.
