3-Year-Old Dies After Drinking Juice Grandfather Found at Bus Terminal
Three-year-old Avuyile Mpengesi’s life ended tragically after he drank juice given to him by his grandfather, Shepherd Mhlanga (53), a vendor at Renkini Bus Terminus in Bulawayo.
The boy’s older sister, aged 10, took a sip and spat it out, saying it was bitter. Moments later, Avuyile collapsed and began writhing in pain, eventually vomiting.
His grandmother, Jennifer Nxumalo, tried to save him by giving him milk, but he lost consciousness in her arms. The 10-year-old also complained of dizziness, and an ambulance was called.
Sadly, Avuyile was declared dead by paramedics, while his sister was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment. She is recovering, according to the family.
The family reported the incident to Mzilikazi Police Station, and Avuyile’s body was taken for a post-mortem. Grief has overwhelmed the family and community as they search for answers.
Jennifer recounted the heartbreaking moment: “Mhlanga brought the drink home and gave it to the kids. Avuyile sipped first, then his sister.
Soon after, Avuyile fell to the ground and started convulsing. His sister also felt dizzy and vomited. The boy was pronounced dead by the ambulance crew.”
Mhlanga said he found the drink at Renkini Bus Terminus, where he sells his goods. Avuyile’s mother, Mathuba Nxumalo, tearfully said, “My father loved my son. He was an adventurous, intelligent boy, and now he’s gone.”
Bulawayo Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube urged the community to avoid consuming found food or drinks, warning that it could put lives at risk. Mhlanga, deeply affected, left the house and hasn’t been seen since.
