Zvishavane’s Uranium Bonanza Turns into Environmental Nightmare

ZVISHAVANE – The discovery of a lucrative uranium deposit in Zvishavane has sparked a surge in illegal mining activities, resulting in a large crack on Novale Road and raising significant safety concerns for local residents and travellers.
The reckless mining practices have caused widespread environmental damage, with many artisanal miners operating without proper equipment or safety measures.
The situation has become so dire that local residents are now living in fear of their lives.
“We are worried about the safety of our families and our community. The mining activities are happening too close to our homes and we don’t know what could happen next, said a local resident,” who wished to remain anonymous.
Zvishavane District Development Coordinator, Darlington Chokera, has voiced his concerns about the illegal mining activities, stating,
“We are launching an aggressive operation to remove these offenders and urge the community to assist by reporting any suspicious activities.”
Chokera emphasized that the illegal mining activities often happen without proper oversight, leading to unsafe conditions for both miners and the surrounding communities.
He also noted that the absence of regulations allows for reckless practices that put lives and infrastructure at risk.
The situation in Zvishavane is not an isolated incident. In nearby Shurugwi, the Shurugwi-Boterekwa road was severely damaged last year due to illegal mining activities, with a massive hole appearing on the road.
The problem began in 2011, when gold miners damaged the same road along the Boterekwa escarpment. Despite repairs, the illegal miners have returned, flouting environmental regulations.
The government must take a more proactive approach to regulating the mining sector and ensuring that artisanal miners operate safely and responsibly.
