Zvishavane Man Sentenced to 38 Years for Seven Armed Robberies

ZVISHAVANE – Witness Mangena (41), of Madhibha 2 Village in Zvishavane, has been sentenced to 43 years in prison after being convicted on seven counts of armed robbery.

However, five years of his sentence were suspended for good behavior, leaving him with 38 years. The sentencing was delivered earlier this week by Magistrate Tavengwa Sangster.

Prosecutor Isheanesu Mashayanye provided a detailed account of the gang’s crimes, highlighting their bold and violent methods.

One of the highlighted incidents occurred on November 12, 2024, when Mangena and his accomplices stormed a residence, assaulted the occupants, and stole US$4,000.

In another daring act, the gang held a family hostage while demanding money and valuables. Their plan was disrupted by gunfire from outside the premises, forcing them to flee before completing the robbery.

Mangena’s arrest marked a critical breakthrough in the case. A victim positively identified him, leading detectives to his home, where he was apprehended.

Investigations later revealed his involvement in six other armed robberies. However, his accomplices remain at large and the Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified its efforts to locate them.

“We urge anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of Mangena’s accomplices to come forward,” said Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri.

The police emphasized their dedication to ensuring public safety and bringing all suspects to justice.
