Zvihari’s “My Last Days” Captures Global Attention Ahead of Dubai Bidding War
Zimbabwean visual artist Asa King Zvihari has stunned the international art scene with his latest painting, My Last Days, which has been valued at a remarkable US$240 000 ahead of a major art auction to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Although the auction date is yet to be confirmed, the artwork has already sparked interest among collectors and curators worldwide.
The evocative piece explores themes of mortality, anguish, ecstasy, and emotional fragility — delivering a poignant visual narrative that has been widely praised by critics.
Zvihari, a past winner of the African Art Competition, drew inspiration from Old Master techniques, with strong echoes of Vincent van Gogh’s At Eternity’s Gate reflected in his brushwork and symbolism.
Zvihari told the press that the painting marks a personal milestone in his artistic journey and represents more than just creative expression.
“This painting is more than just a work of art — it’s an experience. I’m glad art enthusiasts and those who did its valuation have realised its worth.
“This is something huge for an artist starting to make his mark in a world already dominated by very talented painters.”
According to The Herald, the painting’s rising profile has been amplified by Zvihari’s recent exhibitions at prestigious venues in Dubai, including the Renaissance Business Bay Hotel and Le Méridien Hotel.
These showings have positioned him as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary African art.
Last year, he was among a significant number of these artists who had a successful 2024 season, touring the world and showcasing the unique essence of Zimbabwean art.
Art historians note that My Last Days resonates across cultural boundaries, with audiences reporting emotional responses ranging from awe to tears.
The universal themes and emotional depth embedded in the piece have attracted intense pre-auction interest, with experts predicting the final sale price could exceed its current valuation.
Locally, Zvihari joins a distinguished group of Zimbabwean visual artists earning acclaim on the global stage.
Renowned figures such as Dominic Benhura and David Ngwerume have played a crucial role in elevating Zimbabwe’s artistic reputation, alongside key institutions like the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Mbare Art Space, Chapungu Sculpture Village, and the Swiss-Zim Heritage Gallery in Domboshava.
